Witches Remedies & Herbal Pain Killers
  To prepare herbal teas for medicinal purposes, always use one teaspoon of herb to one cup of boiling water. Crush the leaves of fresh or dried herbs and place them in an earthenware teapot. Fill with boiling water and steep for five minutes. (Teas made from roots or seeds must be boiled for 10 - 15 minutes in order to extract the full flavor of the herb.) After the tea has steeped, strain it through a cheesecloth and then add honey or sugar if a sweetener is desired.
 (IMPORTANT: Herbal preparations should never be boiled in aluminum vessels! Use only copper, earthenware or pyrex to avoid contamination of the medicines. Please follow all directions carefully!)
 The powdered root of angelica (gathered when the moon is in Leo, preferably)mixed with a bit of pitch and laid on the biting of dogs, or any other creature, helps to cleanse the open wound and makes it heal more quickly.
 A tea made from catnip, chamomile or skullcap helps to relieve anxiety and nervousness.
 Combine one pint of grain alcohol with one ounce of powdered dried Hawthorne berries. This tincture should be given in doses ranging from one to 15 drops. (NOTE: Although hawthorne is non-toxic, it can produce dizziness if taken in large doses)
 Place the soft fuzzy leaves of the mullein plant in a teapot with hot water and inhale the steam through the spout to relieve the symptoms. Another preventative against mild attacks calls for one tablespoon of sunflower oil taken at night before going to bed. A brew of skunk cabbage, garlic, onion and honey was favored by many witches as a remedy for bronchial asthma. A very old asthma remedy used by the American Indians calls for the smoking of ground red clover blossoms. The leaves of the California gum plant combined with those of the stramonium were also smoked.
 Rub onion juice between the toes two or three times daily until the condition disappears.
 A tea of nettle or rosinweed is recommended for aching backs by many witches.
 Wash the sting with a strong tea of juniper berries and hot water or apply fresh poultice made of mashed garlic plant three times daily. Another old-fashioned pagan home remedy for bee stings is as follows: heat bruised plantain leaves with a match until they are wilted. Do not burn them. Squeeze out the juice and apply it to the insect bite or sting.
 Rub the juice from any of the following plants directly on the burned area: aloe vera leaves, hound's tongue leaves, plantain leaves, houseleeks or quince seeds. To make a healing herbal salve, mix together in a large enamel baking pot one lb. Of lard, four ounces of beeswax and one ounce of any of the following herbs: all-heal, fleabane, Irish moss or lady's bedstraw. (Fresh, finely cut-up herbs are the best to use, but dried herbs may also be used if fresh one's cannot be obtained.) Heat the mixture in a 200 degree oven for 3 & to four hours and then strain through a cheesecloth into a clean, heat-proof container. Allow the salve to cool to room temperature before applying to the burn.
 An ancient gypsy cold remedy recommends the drinking of a syrup made from one ounce of fresh, chopped horseradish root, one pint of boiling water and honey. Another cold remedy is blessed thistle or elder flowers brewed as a tea with a bit of honey or sugar as a sweetener.
 To break colds and fevers, pour one pint of boiling water over one ounce of yarrow. Add one teaspoon of honey and three drops of tabasco sauce. Let stand approximately 10 minutes, and drink while still warm. This old witches remedy will open up the pores and cause profuse sweating to purify the blood of toxins.
 A strong tea made from powdered licorice root and castor oil will produce a powerful laxative effect. Other herbal teas recommended include: bunchberry, horehound and red mulberry.
 Witches' Syrup #1: Cover three-quarter ounce of fresh Coltsfoot leaves and one-quarter ounce of Irish moss with one pint of water and boil down until only one cup remains. Strain and add honey, bringing the syrup to a boil. Remove from heat, let the syrup cool then bottle it. Take as needed in tablespoon doses.
 Witches' Syrup #2: Boil down two or three ounces of sunflower seeds in one quart of water. Add a bit of gin and honey and take three times daily.
 Steep one ounce of rosemary in a pint of boiling water. Cool and then massage into the scalp after washing and rinsing the hair.
 Meditation with saffron tea is recommended.
 Put one ounce of St. John's wort into a pint of boiling blackberry brandy. Cool and then take in wineglass doses. The following herb teas are also recommended: crowfoot, peppermint, red raspberry and slippery elm.
 Brew a strong potion of powdered Goldenseal root, comfrey root, witch hazel bark, white oak bark and pure mountain spring water. Allow potion to cool, then soak a clean white cloth in it and apply directly to the skin. (For external use only)
 Put one ounce of eyebright herb in a pint of boiling water. After it has cooled, bathe the eyes with the infusion.
 According to a 16th century prescription: "Seethe much rosemary herbe and bathe therein to make thee lusty, lively, joyfull, likeing and youngly."
 Boil 2 tablespoons of cayenne pepper in one cup of water. Cool and then add 2 tablespoons of sugar or honey and a bit of orange juice. Drink often until the fever subsides. Lemon balm tea is also highly recommended to reduce fever: Pour one pint of boiling water over one ounce of lemon balm. Infuse for 15 - 20 minutes, cool, strain and then drink. Honey, lemon peel or sugar may be added to sweeten the flavor, if desired.
 Brew a tea from strawberry leaves and flowers of the broom plant. Add cherry juice to sweeten and drink often.
 Add one half teaspoon of myrrh to one-third glass of lukewarm water and use as a mouthwash. Repeat as often as needed.
 Place one-third teaspoon each of rosemary, anise and mint in a cup of boiling water. Steep for ten minutes and then strain. After cooling use as a mouthwash.
 Peppermint, rosemary, catnip and sage teas are excellent for treating the pain of headaches. Tea brewed from the bark of the willow tree is another effective headache remedy. Willow tree bark contains salicin, a substance which changes in the human system to the salicylic acid- the active ingredient of common aspirin.
 Brew a tea from ginseng root and juniper berries and drink it when the moon is in Scorpio to help stimulate the sex organs and increase sexual drive.
 Add one-quarter teaspoon of valerian root, one-quarter teaspoon of skullcap, and one-quarter teaspoon of lady slipper to one cup of boiling water. (Never boil valerian root!) Add some honey or sugar to sweeten the tea and allow it to cool before drinking. (Do not drink more than one cup per day.) Other herbs valued for overcoming insomnia are teas of basil, catnip, chamomile, hops, lemon verbena, passionflower and violet leaves.
 Add one ounce of trailing arbutus leaves to one pint of boiling water. Drink this several times per day.
 Brew a tea from the life root (also known as the female regulator) and squaw weed. Drink once a day before going to bed.
 Boil squaw weed and motherwort herb in a pot of water. Let it cool. Add a bit of brandy and then let it stand for a few days before drinking. The following herb teas are also recommended for menstrual cramps and discomfort: catnip, chamomile, ginger, pennyroyal and sweet cicely.
 Boil arborvitae leaves in lard to make a healing herbal salve. Apply externally to the painful area.
 Rub the infected area with the juice of jimsonweed. Use externally only! Jimsonweed is poisonous when taken internally.
 Pound two cloves of garlic with honey and take for three consecutive nights. (NOTE: The garlic plant was worshiped for many centuries by the gypsies for its remarkable medicinal powers and for its unique ability to scare away vampires!)
 Mix one ounce of powdered bloodroot and three ounces of lard. Bring mixture to a boil, simmer for a short period of time and then strain. Apply this ointment to the affected area. (For external use only!)
 Make a soothing foot bath by brewing a strong tea of fresh alder leaves and soak the feet in it. The fresh leaves of the alder when applied directly to the bare feet also offer excellent relief for burning and soreness.
 Mix one ounce of dried agrimony with one pint of boiling water. Sweeten with honey and drink warm. Another old sore throat remedy is as follows: Boil one-half ounce of bruised sassafras root, one ounce of anise seeds and two ounces of honey in one quart of water for 25-30 minutes and then add one-half pint of spirits of wine. Take as often as needed. In addition to herbal syrups, many witches recommend gargling with sage tea to soothe minor throat irritation.
 Fill a wide-mouthed bottle with a mixture of aloe vera, sea salt, and boiling water. Place the injured area over the mouth of the bottle and push down tightly. The heat and pressure should draw out the splinter or loosen it for easy removal.
 Rub oil of cloves or juice of angelica directly on the toothache to help numb the pain. The herbs of grindelia, raw cow parsnip, sweet cicely and yarrow also reduce toothache pain when placed directly into a cavity. For baby's teething pain, a tea made of hops is quite effective.
 Simmer the fresh root of the dogtooth violet or the adder's tongue in milk and drink.
 Make a sauce by beating sorrel leaves into a mash and adding a bit of sugar and vinegar. Drink to help relieve stomach pain and gas. A broth made from rosemary and the leaves of the western gun plant also offers good relief from an upset stomach or indigestion. The following herbal teas are also highly recommended: chamomile, marigold leaves, mint, peppermint, slippery elm, valerian and yarrow.
 Rubs the warts with milkweed juice three times daily until they disappear.

 Herbal Pain Killers
 Pain killer-Soak 1/2 teaspoon of dried willow bark in 2 cups cold water overnight. Bring to a boil and simmer for 20 minutes. Strain, cool, and bottle. Dosage is 1/4 cup, to be sippped slowly as neede for pain. It can be added to juices or teas if you wish.
 This is a natural painkiller and is good for migrain headaches. Chop 1 tablespoon of Stinking Iris (Iris Foetidissima) and add to 1 pint of water. Boil gently for 15 minutes. Strain and take up to 3 tablespoons per day. Has a slight laxative effect so you may want to weaken it futher.
 Mix together 1 tablespoon each of bee balm, hops, peppermint, camomile, and crushed fennel seed. Add 1 tablespoon of the mixture to 1 cup boiling water. Steep 10 minutes and strain. Sweeten with honey. Drink 1/2 hour before bed.
 Vivid blue flowers are typicla of many of the best nerve herbs and skullcap is one of them. Chop 1/2 cup of the leaves and flowers and add to 2cups boiling water. Steep 15 minutes and strain. Sweeten with honey and drink several cups a day. Can be used to treat epilepsy, convulsions, and any involuntary trembling of the limbs. Skullcap is also used during drug or alcohol withdrawal to lessen sysmptoms of withdrawal.
 This is very good for nervous headaches. Mix 1 cup each of dried skullcap, sage, and peppermint. To use, pour 1 cup boiling water of 1 teaspoon of herb mixture. Cover and let steep 10 minutes. Strain and sweeten. Drink warm as needed. Skullcap is especally effective in dispelling headaches. It relaxes the whole system and is non-addictive.
 Put 1 ounce each of mugwort, valerian, chamomile, and agrimony to 1 pint of boiling water. Allow to simmer for 30 minutes. Strain and add t bath water. Very good for aching muscles.
 Pour 1 pint of boiling water over 1 teaspoon of dried catnip. Cover and steep until cool. Flavor if desired. Strain and sweeten. For children, give 1 tablespoon; adults get 2 tablespoons.
 Pour 1 pint of boiling water over 1 ounce of feverfew flowers. Cover an steep until cool. Strain and sweeten with honey. Drink cool.
 Mix 1 tablespoon each of dried hop, chamomile, and lavendare flowers, skullcap, and powdered valerian root. Put in size #00 capsules. Take 2 capsules every couple of hours (not to exceed 6 capsules), shortly before you retire fo rthe night. This should not be taken longer then 2 days. If the problem persists after two days, please consult your physician, to find out the reason for your inability to sleep. This is to be used only as a temporary measure.
 Mix 2 tablespoons dried peppermint with 1 tablespoon each of rosemary and sage. This really soothes the nerves and allows you to relax enough to go to sleep.
 Caution -- Take this only once a day (at bedtime to induce sleep) Pour 1 pint boiling water over 1 teaspoon powdered valerian root. Cover and steep 10 minutes. Strain and sweeten. Add a pinch of mace as flavoring if desired. Drink warm.
 Valerian is not a very pleasant smelling herb, but it is very effective. The valerian maybe added to other, better tasting herbs and will be just as effective. Simply add the herb of your choice to the water along with the valerian.
 Mix together 2 tablespooons chamomile, 2 tablespoons skullcap, 1 teaspoon goldenseal, 2 teaspoons elder flower, 1/2 teaspoon peppermint powder, and 1 tablespoon pennyroyal. Add mixture to 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer. Simmer until liquid is reduced by half. Bottle and label. Dosage is 1-2 tablespoons to one cup of hot water. Sweeten to taste. Take at bedtime to induce sleep.
 During your menstrual cycle, drink sever glasses of red raspberry juice daily to prevent cramps and pain.
 Mix 1 ounce each of cramp bark, skullcap, and blue cohosh. Add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Place in a quart of warm wine. Steep several days. Strain and take 1 tablespoon doses several times a day for cramps.
 Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 tablespoon of dried raspberry leaves. Cover and allow to steep 15 minutes. Strain and sweeten. Drink warm several times during the day.
 Apply a poultice made from comfrey to relieve sprains and swellings. The Indians called this herb knitbone and use it extensively.
 Mix together 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup of linseed oil, and 4 tablespoons witch hazel. Use as a massage.
 Mix together 6 ounces of witch hazel, 4 tablespoons lanloin, and 6 tablespoons of menthol in a double boiler until creamy. Remove from fire and cool in the refrigerator. Use as a massage.
 Add several drops of lavender oil to your bath to relieve neuralgia(spasms of pain).
 Mix 1 cup each of bucthorn bark, cayenne pepper, alfalfa, comfrey, white yarrow, yucca root, parsley, and black cohosh root. Grind up thoroghly and fill some #00 capsules with teh herbal mixture. The first week take 1 capsule daily; the second week take 2 capsules daily; and during the third week take 3 capsules daily.
 Mix together 1 once of chickweed (reduces inflammation and aids in healing), 1 ounce of wormwood (a great pain reliever), and 1 ounce of yarrow (an anti-bacterial agent that also helps relieve pain). The yarrow plant contains achillein and achilleic acid. These substances reduce the clotting time of blood, sothey help stop any bleeding. Yarrow also has pain-killing and anit-inflammatory properties that are simular to asprin. Add the mixutre of herbs to 2 piints of olive oil and simmer 3 hours. Strain and add 3 ounces of beeswax and 1 teaspoon of tincture of benzoin. Test for consistency before pouring into wide mouth containers.
 Place 1 ounce of the buds in 1 pint of hot olive oil and allow to simmer, covered, 3 hours. Strain and add 1-1/2 ounces of beeswax and 1/2 teaspoon tincture of benzoin to the strined mixture. Test for consistancy and place in sterile jar. This is a good salve to use on burns, scratches, swlling injuries. Also good for any skin eruptions. The signature of balm of Gilead is the resinour exudation covering the buds. It contains salicin, which is also found in asprin. It has some of the same pain-killing and anti-inflammatory properties as asprin.
 Place 1-1/2 ounces of chamomile and 1-1/2 teaspoons of powdered peppermint into 1/2 quart of vodka. Allow to steep for 2 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and bottle. Use as a sedative for adults. Dosage is 1/2 dropperful under the tongue, as needed.
 Mix together 1/4 cup each of olive oil and spirits of camphor. Use to massage sore muscles.
 Place 1/2 cup of rosemary leaves and 1/2 teaspoon oil of cloves in 1 cup vegetable oil. Simmer gently for 20 minutes. Strain well and bottle.
